Doctrine of the Trinity

Maelezo ya Kozi

This course offers a thorough theological study of the Doctrine of the Trinity, emphasizing its biblical foundation, historical development, and systematic formulation within the Reformed tradition. The Trinity—one God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—is not merely an abstract concept but the central mystery of Christian faith and life, the foundation of all true knowledge of God, and the source of salvation and communion with Him.

Students will begin by exploring the scriptural basis for Trinitarian belief, tracing key texts from both the Old and New Testaments that reveal the personal distinctions within the one divine essence. The course will then examine the historical articulation of Trinitarian doctrine in the early Church, particularly through the ecumenical councils of Nicaea (AD 325) and Constantinople (AD 381), and the contributions of the Church Fathers such as Athanasius and Augustine.

Key theological concepts such as homoousios (same essence), perichoresis (mutual indwelling), eternal generation, procession, and inseparable operations will be carefully unpacked. The course also addresses contemporary distortions of Trinitarian doctrine and reaffirms the classical, confessional understanding of God.

Finally, students will reflect on the practical significance of the Trinity for Christian worship, prayer, identity, community, and mission.
