Revival Movements and Pentecostalism in Church History
Maelezo ya Kozi
This course explores the history and theology of revival movements and the rise of Pentecostalism, tracing their origins, development, theological emphases, and impact on global Christianity. While maintaining a Reformed theological lens, the course seeks to critically engage with these movements, recognizing their contributions and evaluating their challenges.
The course begins with an overview of revival movements within Protestant church history—such as the First and Second Great Awakenings, the Evangelical Revival in England, the Pietist and Methodist movements, and the Welsh Revival. The second part focuses on the emergence of Pentecostalism in the early 20th century, beginning with the Azusa Street Revival (1906).
Students will evaluate these movements in light of Scripture and Reformed doctrine, paying close attention to issues such as the authority of Scripture, spiritual gifts, emotionalism, ecclesiology, and theological discernment.
