Introduction to Theology

Maelezo ya Kozi

This course serves as an essential foundation for all theological study by introducing students to the nature, task, sources, and method of Christian theology. Students will explore what theology is, why it matters, and how it should be done rightly—especially within the authority of Scripture and in service to the Church of Jesus Christ.

The course surveys the branches of theology (systematic, biblical, historical, practical), the sources of theology (Scripture, tradition, reason, and experience), and the disciplines of theology (exegesis, doctrinal formulation, application). Emphasis will be placed on the Bible as the ultimate and infallible authority for all theology, in line with Reformed convictions.

Key questions are explored: What is truth? What is sound doctrine? How can the church distinguish orthodoxy from heresy? How does culture influence theology? How should African church leaders faithfully develop and apply theology in their own contexts?

Students will also examine the Reformed theological method, shaped by confessional standards (e.g., Westminster Confession of Faith, Belgic Confession), and learn how theology must not only be known but lived, preached, defended, and passed on to others.
