The Study of Genesis

Maelezo ya Kozi

This course is a detailed and theological examination of the Book of Genesis, the first and foundational book of the Bible. Genesis sets the stage for understanding the rest of Scripture by revealing the origin of all things, the nature of God, the condition of humanity, and the beginning of God's redemptive plan. As the book of beginnings, Genesis introduces crucial theological themes such as creation, sin, judgment, covenant, promise, providence, and election—making it indispensable for any serious student of Scripture and servant in ministry.

The course is divided into two main sections: the Primeval History (chapters 1–11) and the Patriarchal History (chapters 12–50). The first section presents universal themes such as the creation of the world, the fall of man, and the global consequences of sin. The second section focuses on God's covenantal dealings with Abraham and his descendants—Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph—highlighting the roots of the nation of Israel and the early contours of God's saving plan through a chosen people.

Throughout the course, students will engage in theological reflection, historical-cultural analysis, and pastoral application. Special attention will be given to how Genesis points to Christ and how its themes should shape Christian life and ministry today. Students will also explore the relevance of Genesis for addressing contemporary African issues such as human dignity, tribalism, gender identity, ecological stewardship, and generational legacy.
